Jean Boulogne, called Giambologna (1529-1608)
The pose of the figure is a variation of a motif often repeated by Giambologna. The composition works well on both large and small scales and was at the time the most well-known of Giambologna's motifs. The composition develops out of an upwardly spiralling curve, initiated by the raised leg. This Venus was made in Florence around 1580/85.
