Carnuntum

The earrings came from a grave, discovered in 1783 in Carnuntum, a roman town near Vienna. During the Roman Empire ornate earrings like this from the 3rd century AD were a way of expressing wealth and status. The fashion of the time was for clear, simple shapes combined with striking gemstones or pearls.
