The blue animal represented on the shield was interpreted as the mythical Ahuitzotl, an Aztec ruler. Since the Aztecs represented this mythical animal with a smooth and moist skin, different from the appearance of the creature on the shield, it is not an Ahuitzotl that is represented, but probably a dog-like animal; the usual current interpretation is that it is a coyote.
