Carnuntum

The pendant is a copy after Roman earrings made in the 3rd century AD which were found in Carnuntum in 1783. The earrings are on show in the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities.
During the Roman Empire ornate earrings were a way of expressing wealth and status. The fashion of the time was for clear, simple shapes combined with striking gemstones or pearls.
