Printed with a detail from the painting "The Triumph of Bacchus" (c. 1655-59) by Michaelina Wautier (c. 1614/18-1689).
Today it is assumed that this is a self-portrait of the artist Michaelina Wautier, who boldly depicts herself in a context absolutely inappropriate for an ‘honorable woman’ of the seventeenth century. Young, with blonde hair, wrapped in a loosely fitting pink cloth (though her left breast remains uncovered), she is looking directly at us. She seems, from her posture and glance to be distanced from the scene and at the same time completely unconnected to it. There is no shame or timidity in her gaze, she is bursting with pride and self-confidence!
